Not easily. Korea’s national recreation forest cabins (자연휴양림 숲속의집) are booked only through foresttrip.go.kr (숲나들e), which is in Korean and requires membership with a Korean identity-verification step at sign-up, run by a Korean mobile identity company. If you are a short-term visitor with no Korean phone number, you will most likely not get through it. Residents with an alien registration card and a Korean phone in their own name have a better chance. And the person who books must be the person who checks in, with ID. A friend can’t book it for you and hand it over.
The good news: if you (or a resident friend) do get an account, the cabins are cheap, and sold-out dates open up more often than you’d think.
Who runs these cabins?
| Type | Who runs it | Where to book |
|---|---|---|
| National recreation forests (국립) | Korea Forest Service | foresttrip.go.kr — rules below apply |
| Public forests (공립) | Provinces, cities, counties | Usually also listed on foresttrip.go.kr, but each one sets its own schedule |
| Private forests (사립) | Private operators | Varies; own schedules and refund rules |
The rules in this guide (lottery, 6-week first-come, penalty table) are the national forest rules. The FAQ marks them as applying to the national forests only. Public and private forests set their own: one public forest in Gyeonggi runs its own monthly lottery on the 1st, and one private forest takes first-come bookings up to two months ahead. Responsibility for booking and refunds sits with the local government or the private operator.
Can I sign up as a foreigner?

Here is what the official pages actually say:
- Sign-up has four steps: terms → identity check (본인확인) → details → done.
- The identity check is handled by Korea Mobile Certification (한국모바일인증), a Korean mobile-phone verification service, according to the site’s privacy policy.
- Required member data: name, gender, date of birth, mobile number, email, address, and identity-verification data (CI, DI). CI/DI are codes produced by Korea’s identity-verification services, not something you can type in.
- You must be 19 or older to join.
- Login options like simple authentication (carrier PASS, Samsung Pass, KakaoTalk, Naver, bank certificates) and Kakao login only work after you already have a regular account.
- “Country of origin” is an optional field in the member data, so the system does expect some foreign members.
In 2023 the Korean government said it would work with the national recreation forest office to let foreigners verify identity by email instead of a Korean phone number. No official page we checked shows that option today, so don’t count on it. A third-party English guide (2026) also describes the site as Korean-only with Korean verification at sign-up.
Honest summary:
| You are… | Realistic chance of booking yourself |
|---|---|
| Tourist, no Korean phone | Very low |
| Resident with ARC + Korean phone in your name | Possible, try the sign-up early (not on opening morning) |
| Korean citizen or resident friend helping | Yes, but they must be at check-in (see below) |
ASEAN nationals living in Korea: the National ASEAN Recreation Forest (국립아세안자연휴양림, Yangju, Gyeonggi) gives priority booking to workers, students and multicultural families from the 10 ASEAN countries who live in Korea. Individuals apply with proof of nationality sent by email or fax; phone 031-871-2796. Tourists are not covered.
How bookings open (national forests)
| What | When (KST) |
|---|---|
| Weekday stays (off-season) | First-come, opens Wednesday 9:00 a.m., 6 weeks before the stay |
| Weekend stays (Fri, Sat, day before a public holiday) | Lottery: apply 4th of the month 9:00 a.m. → 9th 6:00 p.m., for next month |
| Lottery results | 10th of the month, 4:00 p.m. |
| Unclaimed / unpaid lottery slots | Released first-come on the 15th, 9:00 a.m. |
| Peak season (July 15 – Aug 24) | Separate lottery; the plan is announced every May |
In practice: for a weekend stay in any month, apply from the 4th (9:00 a.m.) to the 9th (6:00 p.m.) of the month before. Results come on the 10th at 4:00 p.m., and unclaimed or unpaid slots open first-come on the 15th at 9:00 a.m.
Pay quickly after a first-come booking. You have until 23:00 the next day, or just 3 hours if the stay is within 7 days. Unpaid bookings are cancelled automatically.
Other limits from the official FAQ:
- Up to 15 bookings per month at national forests (10 at the same forest).
- You can’t change the date. Cancel and rebook.
- There is a waitlist: you only move up when the person ahead cancels. Notifications by KakaoTalk or text aren’t guaranteed, so check My Page → reservation status → waitlist. When your turn comes, the booking appears under “payment pending” as 예약전송; click 대기예약확정 (confirm) and pay.
What does it cost?
Fees are set nationally. Example from Cheongtaesan National Recreation Forest (Gangwon):
| Cabin (숲속의집) | Off-season weekday | Weekend & peak season |
|---|---|---|
| 4 people | ₩45,000 | ₩82,000 |
| 5 people | ₩58,000 | ₩106,000 |
| 6 people | ₩75,000 | ₩134,000 |
| Camping deck (6 people) | ₩15,000 | ₩16,500 |
Entrance and parking fees are separate. Payment is by credit card, virtual bank account, or real-time bank transfer (cash only in special cases like same-day walk-ins). The payment page lists Korean card issuers (Hyundai, KB Kookmin, Hana, Samsung, Shinhan, BC, Lotte, Citi and others) and says nothing about overseas cards, so a foreign-issued card may not go through.
Cancellation penalties (national forests)
| When you cancel | Off-season weekday | Off-season weekend | Peak weekday | Peak weekend |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5+ days before | Free | Free | Free | Free |
| 4 days before | Free | Free | 10% | 20% |
| 3 days before | Free | Free | 30% | 40% |
| 2 days before | Free | Free | 50% | 60% |
| 1 day before | 10% | 20% | 80% | 90% |
| Same day | 20% | 30% | 100% | 100% |
The same table appears on the pages of different national forests (we compared Yumyeongsan and Unmunsan). No penalty if the forest can’t be reached because of a weather disaster, or if the forest itself can’t provide the facility.
Our data: sold-out dates do come back
OUR DATA
We run a vacancy-alert service that watched sold-out cabin dates from Sept 16 to Oct 2, 2026. Of 141 sold-out dates users were waiting on (stay date already passed), 53 (38%) got at least one cancellation. More than a third of the openings we detected appeared 15+ days before the stay — cancellations are not only last-minute.Caveat: we check roughly every 2 hours and only the dates our users asked about, so treat these as rough numbers.
The free-cancellation windows in the table above explain part of this. People drop bookings while it still costs nothing.
Workarounds if you can’t sign up
1. A Korean or resident friend books and comes with you. The reservation terms say the person using the facility must be the person who booked, and must show ID to prove it. Bookings can’t be sold or swapped. The only exceptions are close family (parents, grandparents, children and grandchildren, spouse, siblings, and the booker’s parents-in-law), who must be able to prove the relationship. So a friend booking “for you” only works if they stay with you.
2. Never buy a reservation from a stranger. The terms ban buying, selling, or exchanging reservations, and the ID check at the cabin is what catches it.
3. National park campsites and shelters instead. The Korea National Park Service runs a separate English booking site for foreigners (reservation.knps.or.kr/foreigner) for shelters and campsites, with sign-up by email and no Korean phone number on the form. But the big-peak shelters go by a lottery that sits on the Korean menu, and KNPS doesn’t say whether an English-site account can apply there: see how the Jirisan shelter lottery works and Seoraksan shelter booking.
If a day hike is enough, Hallasan in Jeju needs no cabin, just a free trail booking: how to book Hallasan.
4. Private campsites and glamping. Private operators take bookings through their own channels with their own rules. Check refund terms and whether your card is accepted before paying.
5. Public or private forests with their own systems. Since each sets its own schedule, a hotel concierge or tour operator may be able to call them directly.
When a forest cabin booking goes wrong
I can’t get past the identity check.
That step is built around Korean mobile verification. Without a Korean phone in your name it will likely stop you. Don’t create an account in someone else’s name. The name has to match the ID shown at check-in.
The whole site is in Korean.
There is no official English version of foresttrip.go.kr that we could find. Browser translation helps with reading, not with the verification step.
Everything is sold out.
Weekends go by lottery, so first-come never opens them. Your chances are the 15th-of-the-month leftovers, the waitlist, and cancellations.
My booking disappeared.
If you didn’t pay by the deadline (23:00 next day, or 3 hours for stays within a week), it was cancelled automatically.
I want to move my date.
Not allowed. Cancel (check the penalty table) and book again.
My friend booked but can’t come.
Then you can’t use it unless you are close family of the booker.
