Korea National Park Shelters (2026): All 13 and How to Book

Last checked: October 11, 2026 · Sources: Korea National Park Service booking site (reservation.knps.or.kr) — shelter pages, lottery notice and policy, linked below.

Korea National Park Service (KNPS) runs 13 mountain shelters that you can book online, in four parks: Jirisan (7), Seoraksan (4), Deogyusan (1) and Sobaeksan (1). All 13 are allocated by lottery first, and beds nobody wins or pays for then go on sale first-come. A bed costs ₩20,000 on weeknights and ₩30,000 on Friday and Saturday nights and in peak periods. Eight of the 13 sell no beds from November 14 to December 15 because of the autumn wildfire-prevention period.

Checked October 11, 2026 (our look at KNPS’s monthly availability pages, around 07:00 KST)

  • Seoraksan: Huiungak had no free bed on any night left in October; Socheong, Suryeomdong and Yangpok had one or two nights each. November 1–13 still had beds on most nights at Huiungak, Suryeomdong and Yangpok; Socheong was free on only 5 of those 13 nights.
  • Jirisan: free beds at most of the seven shelters on most weeknights, but the Saturdays Oct 17, 24 and 31 were full at almost all of them. Nogodan was the hardest: free on 7 of the 21 nights left in October.
  • Deogyusan (Satgatjae): free on most nights to Nov 13, full on Saturdays Oct 24 and 31.
  • Sobaeksan (Je2 Yeonhwabong): bookable on every night shown, through Dec 31.
  • The next lottery round (stays in January–February 2027) has not been announced. Going by KNPS’s even-month rule, applications should open around Dec 1, 2026.

Which Korea national park shelters can you book?

These are the only shelters on the KNPS booking system. Capacities are from the list attached to KNPS’s round-6 lottery notice (Sept 29, 2026) and match each shelter’s own KNPS page.

Satgatjae 삿갓재 Deogyusan 40 Yes No sales

That’s 753 beds in total, by our count. Two things the list tells you:

  • Jirisan has more than half of all beds (449). It’s also the only park where you can link several shelters into a multi-night ridge trek, which is why KNPS allows 6 Jirisan bookings a month instead of 4.
  • Je2 Yeonhwabong is the third-biggest shelter (110 beds) and was the easiest to get: on October 11 it had free beds on every night shown. It’s in Sobaeksan National Park, Danyang, North Chungcheong.

Not on the list: Seoraksan’s Jungcheong shelter, which can no longer be booked on the KNPS system, and Hallasan, which Jeju Province runs on its own booking site (how to book Hallasan).

How much does a national park shelter cost?

All 13 shelters charge the same, per person, per night:

Night Price
Weeknight (Sun–Thu, except the night before a public holiday) ₩20,000
Friday, Saturday, or the night before a public holiday ₩30,000
Peak periods, any night: Jul 1 – Aug 31 and Oct 1 – Nov 15 ₩30,000

Bring your own sleeping bag: Seoraksan’s shelters stopped renting blankets and selling sleeping bags in May 2022, and we found no KNPS page offering bedding at the other parks. Shelter shops sell basics such as water, instant rice and gas canisters, but stock runs out: on Oct 2, 2026 KNPS posted that 2-litre water was sold out at Rotary and Byeoksoryeong.

Lottery or first-come?

Both, in that order. Every two months KNPS runs one lottery for all 13 shelters (and its campsites):

  1. Lottery. Applications open on the 1st of every even-numbered month (the next weekday if that’s a public holiday) and cover the next two months of stays. Applying early doesn’t help.
  2. Winners pay within a short window: about 30 hours in the Nov–Dec 2026 round. Unpaid wins are cancelled.
  3. Leftovers go first-come a couple of days later. For the Nov–Dec 2026 round, that was Oct 8 at 10:00 KST. After that, you can book any free bed until 13:59 on the day of your stay.

Besides the KNPS site, Kakao says that since June 2026 KNPS shelters, including the lottery, can also be booked in KakaoTalk’s Reservations tab and in Kakao Map, with the same KNPS rules. Whether a visitor without a Korean phone number can use them: not officially confirmed — check before you go.

Limits that apply to every shelter:

Rule Limit
People per booking Up to 5, including you
Nights per booking 1 (two nights = two bookings)
Lottery applications 4 a month; one win per date
Bookings a month 4 (Jirisan: 6)
Who can use a win Only the applicant
Waitlist 10% of capacity

KNPS also keeps 10% of shelter places for Green Point bookings (points for carrying litter out).

Our take: in the lottery, apply for one big shelter and one small one on the same date. You can win only one per date, so you lose nothing if both come up; it does use two of your four applications. If you missed the lottery, check the first-come sale on its opening morning, then again a few days before your trip, when unpaid and cancelled beds come back.

For the full lottery dates, payment, refunds and step-by-step booking, use our park guides: Jirisan shelter booking and Seoraksan shelter booking. If you’re signing up as a visitor, read what works on the KNPS English site first: the lottery is only on the Korean menu.

When are shelters closed or not for sale?

Autumn wildfire-prevention period. In the Nov–Dec 2026 round, eight shelters sell no beds from November 14 to December 15: Seseok, Byeoksoryeong and Yeonhacheon (Jirisan), all four Seoraksan shelters, and Satgatjae (Deogyusan). Their own KNPS pages say they can’t be used from November 15 to December 15. The other five (Jangteomok, Nogodan, Chibatmok, Rotary and Je2 Yeonhwabong) had no sales stop in that round.

Spring wildfire-prevention period. Parks also close shelters in spring. In 2026, Seoraksan closed all its shelters and high trails from March 4 to May 15. Spring 2027 dates for any park: not officially confirmed — check before you go.

Winter. No winter shelter closures are listed so far. The January–February 2027 round hasn’t been published yet, and its list will show any sales limits.

Weather. During weather warnings KNPS can stop shelter use. Under its refund policy, when a disaster or a special weather report (including a preliminary one) stops shelter use, your fee is returned and no cancellation fee is charged.

Things that change before you go

  • Nogodan by road: Gurye County closes the Siamjae–Seongsamjae section (1.4 km) to all vehicles on weekdays from October 12 to December 10, 2026. Weekends and public holidays are open. Seongsamjae is the usual start for Nogodan and the Jirisan ridge, so check how you’ll get there on a weekday.
  • Satgatjae has no food-waste bins from October 9, 2026, according to the park’s notice. Bring only the food you’ll eat and carry all rubbish out.
  • Check-in needs ID for everyone in your group: a passport works.

For Jirisan shelters, our Seoul to Jirisan by bus or train guide covers buses to each trailhead.
