New here? Start with our overview of all 13 Korea national park shelters: beds, prices and which ones stop sales from Nov 14 to Dec 15.
Seoraksan has four bookable shelters right now: Huiungak (80 beds), Socheong (50), Suryeomdong (16) and Yangpok (8). They are booked through the KNPS lottery, not first-come: applications open on the 1st of every even-numbered month (the next weekday if that’s a holiday) for stays in the following two months, and beds nobody wins or pays for then go on sale first-come. A bed costs 20,000 won on weeknights and 30,000 won on Friday/Saturday nights and in peak periods (Jul 1 – Aug 31 and Oct 1 – Nov 15). Every autumn the shelters close for wildfire prevention (in 2026: no sales Nov 14 – Dec 15). Jungcheong, the famous shelter near Daecheongbong, was demolished in late 2023 and is being replaced by a small emergency shelter without overnight stays. It is not on the booking system.
Where things stand (checked Oct 7, 2026)
- The Nov–Dec 2026 lottery is over (results were posted Oct 6).
- Leftover beds for Nov 1 – Dec 31 open first-come from Thu, Oct 8, 10:00 KST.
- Planning a late-November ridge trek? Seoraksan shelters can’t be booked Nov 14 – Dec 15. Aim for early November or after Dec 15.
- Next lottery (stays in Jan–Feb 2027): expected to open Dec 1, 2026, not yet announced.
Which Seoraksan shelters can you book?
From the shelter list attached to the KNPS round-6 lottery notice (Sept 29, 2026):
| Shelter | Korean | Beds (people) | In lottery? | Nov–Dec 2026 note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Huiungak | 희운각 | 80 | Yes | Not sold Nov 14 – Dec 15 |
| Socheong | 소청 | 50 | Yes | Not sold Nov 14 – Dec 15 |
| Suryeomdong | 수렴동 | 16 | Yes | Not sold Nov 14 – Dec 15 |
| Yangpok | 양폭 | 8 | Yes | Not sold Nov 14 – Dec 15 |
| Jungcheong | 중청 | — | No | Demolished 2023; being replaced by a small emergency shelter, no overnight stays |
A few things the numbers tell you:
- Huiungak is the big one. With 80 beds it’s your best odds in the lottery.
- Yangpok has only 8 beds and Suryeomdong 16. Treat them as backups, not plan A.
- Socheong now has 50 places. In spring 2026 KNPS planned to close it from May 16 to June 30 to rebuild the sleeping berths. On April 14 it changed course: Socheong opened for those dates after all, with capacity set at 50 and beds sold first-come. The English shelter page still says 69 — trust the lottery list.
What happened to Jungcheong?
KNPS announced in August 2023 that Jungcheong shelter would be demolished and rebuilt, with use restricted from a planned date of October 16, 2023 until construction is complete (Kangwon Ilbo reported it stayed open until October 31, 2023). The Seoraksan office told Kangwon Ilbo (Nov 2023) that the new building would be a small emergency shelter without the old lodging and cooking facilities, and that Socheong and Huiungak take over the overnight role. Jungcheong is not on the 2026 lottery list and can’t be booked. Plan your ridge trek around Socheong or Huiungak.
How much does a Seoraksan shelter cost?
Prices went up on January 1, 2026. All four Seoraksan shelters charge the same per person, per night:
| Night | Price |
|---|---|
| Weeknight (Sun–Thu, except the night before a public holiday) | 20,000 won |
| Weekend (Fri, Sat, and the night before a public holiday) | 30,000 won |
| Peak periods: Jul 1 – Aug 31 and Oct 1 – Nov 15 (any night) | 30,000 won |
For this round that means every night from Nov 1 to Nov 13 is 30,000 won (sales stop from Nov 14). The shelter shops sell basics like 2-litre water (3,000 won), instant rice (3,000 won) and gas canisters, but there’s no bedding to rent.
How a lottery round runs (example: round 6, Nov–Dec 2026)
| Step | Date and time (KST) |
|---|---|
| Stays covered | Sun, Nov 1 – Thu, Dec 31, 2026 |
| Apply | Thu, Oct 1, 10:00 – Tue, Oct 6, 10:00 |
| Draw | Tue, Oct 6, 13:00 |
| Results | Tue, Oct 6, 16:00 |
| Pay (winners only) | Oct 6, 16:00 – Wed, Oct 7, 22:00 |
| Leftover beds, first-come | From Thu, Oct 8, 10:00 |
The KNPS policy page says lotteries open on the 1st of every even-numbered month, each covering two months of stays. If that pattern holds, stays for January–February 2027 should open for applications on Tuesday, Dec 1, 2026. KNPS hasn’t announced it yet, so check the notice board in late November.
Closures to plan around
Autumn wildfire-prevention period. The shelter list marks all four Seoraksan shelters as “산불방지기간 통제 (판매제한: 11.14.~12.15.)” — controlled during the wildfire-prevention period, no sales from Nov 14 to Dec 15. The shelters’ own KNPS pages say they can’t be used Nov 15 – Dec 15, 2026. The high trails usually close at the same time: in 2025 the Seoraksan office shut the high-altitude routes to Daecheongbong (including the Gongnyong ridge and the Hangyeryeong route) from Nov 15 to Dec 15. Check the park’s notice for this year’s trail closure dates before you plan anything from mid-November.
Spring wildfire-prevention period. In 2026, Seoraksan’s English notice closed all shelters and the high-altitude trails from March 4 to May 15. Low trails such as Ulsanbawi, Biryong Falls and the Sinheungsa area stayed open. Expect a similar window in spring 2027.
Renovations. Shelters close or change capacity for work from time to time (Socheong’s spring 2026 bed works are an example). Always read the notice board before applying.
Weather. KNPS controls trails during weather warnings. Under the refund policy, if a special weather report stops shelter use, no cancellation fee is charged. A Seoraksan notice adds that in that case the park office cancels the bookings itself: don’t cancel yourself (that triggers the normal fee); call the office on +82-33-801-0900 instead.
How the lottery works

These rules come from the KNPS lottery page and apply to all lottery shelters, including Seoraksan:
- Timing doesn’t matter. It’s a lottery, so applying at 10:00:01 gives you no advantage.
- Up to 4 shelter applications per person per month.
- Same date, more than one shelter is OK (for example Huiungak and Socheong on Nov 7), but you can win only one per date.
- The win belongs to the applicant. A winning booking can’t be handed to someone else.
- Unpaid = cancelled. Miss the payment deadline and the bed goes to the leftover sale.
Other limits from the KNPS policy page: each shelter booking is for 1 night (two nights means two bookings, which count toward your 4 a month), and 10% of beds are set aside for Green Point bookings.
Booking a Seoraksan shelter: the steps

- Make an account. On reservation.knps.or.kr, switch to EN and choose Sign up. The English form asks for first and last name, email (your ID), password (8–16 characters with an uppercase letter, a lowercase letter and a special character), birthday and sex. It does not ask for a Korean phone number. (The Korean site’s non-member login verifies you with a Korean mobile phone or i-PIN, so it won’t work for most visitors.)
- Open the lottery. On the Korean menu it’s 예약하기 → 추첨제 (Reservation → Lottery), then 대피소 (Shelter). The English menu has a shelter reservation page but no lottery entry, and KNPS doesn’t say whether an English-site account can apply on the Korean menu. If yours can’t, call 1670-9201 before the window closes.
- Pick Seoraksan (설악산), the shelter, the date and group size.
- Apply before the window closes (for round 6 it was Oct 6, 10:00 KST).
- Check results at 16:00 KST on results day under My page → My reservations (마이페이지 → 나의 예약목록).
- Pay within the payment window (round 6: until 22:00 KST the day after results). The policy page lists card, real-time bank transfer, virtual account and easy-pay apps (KakaoPay, Naver Pay, Samsung Pay). KNPS doesn’t say whether foreign-issued cards work; if that’s all you have, ask the help line before the payment window opens.
- On the day, register at the shelter. The English shelter guide says you and every companion need an ID card or passport.
For the same lottery rules at another park, see our Jirisan shelter guide.
Shelter rules worth knowing
From KNPS notices and the English shelter guide:
- Bring your own bedding. KNPS stopped blanket rental and sleeping-bag sales in May 2022.
- No alcohol in shelters.
- Only the people on the booking may stay. You can’t add companions after booking.
- Check-in: 15:00–18:00 from November to March, 15:00–19:00 from April to October (KNPS entry-time table). Seoraksan’s shelter notice says a booking nobody has checked in by closing time is cancelled automatically.
- Cash for Yangpok. A 2023 Seoraksan notice says Yangpok’s shop can’t take cards because of poor signal. Bring cash.
Trailhead cut-off times
You can’t start up a trail after its cut-off time, booking or not. This is the current KNPS table for the Seoraksan approaches to the shelters:
| Trailhead and direction | Last entry Nov–Mar | Last entry Apr–Oct | Shelter guests get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Biseondae → Yangpok (Cheonbuldong valley) | 12:00 | 14:00 | Huiungak +1 h, Yangpok +2 h |
| Osaek (Namseorak) → Daecheongbong | 11:00 | 12:00 | Socheong, Huiungak +1 h |
| Hangyeryeong → Hangyeryeong junction | 10:00 | 12:00 | Socheong, Huiungak +1 h |
| Baekdam → Suryeomdong → Socheong | 13:00 | 14:00 | Socheong +1 h, Suryeomdong +2 h |
Example: a Huiungak guest starting from Biseondae on Nov 7 must pass the gate by 13:00 (12:00 plus 1 hour).
Cancellation and refunds
From the KNPS reservation and refund policy:
| You cancel… | Refund |
|---|---|
| 3+ days before your stay, or on the day you paid | Full refund |
| 2 days before | 90% |
| 1 day before | 80% |
| On the day, before 12:00 | 70% (see the no-show note below) |
| Didn’t cancel / didn’t show | No refund + no-show penalty |
- Deadline: before 12:00 noon on the day of your stay.
- Same-day cancellation: cancel it yourself on the booking site before 12:00 on the day and you get 70% back. KNPS’s refund table adds a no-show restriction for same-day cancellations, but its no-show rules say a cancellation you make yourself before 12:00 on the day is exempt; one made by staff counts as a no-show.
- No-show penalty: 1st time = 1 month without bookings; 2nd time and after = 3 months. Cleared after a year without further no-shows.
- If KNPS cancels: full refund at 3+ days’ notice; 110% / 120% at 2 / 1 days’ notice.
Getting there
Seoraksan’s main entrance on the Sokcho side is the Sogongwon / Seorak-dong area. The Seoraksan National Park Visitor Center is at 833 Seoraksan-ro, Sokcho-si, open 09:00–17:00, closed Mondays (VisitKorea). VisitKorea’s route: take bus 7 or 7-1 from Sokcho Intercity Bus Terminal and get off at the Seoraksan Sogongwon Park stop.
Which entrance you use depends on your shelter. The KNPS entry-time table ties each shelter’s time extension to these gates:
| Shelter | Gate(s) |
|---|---|
| Yangpok | Biseondae (from Sogongwon, up the Cheonbuldong valley) |
| Huiungak | Biseondae, Osaek or Hangyeryeong |
| Suryeomdong | Baekdam (Inner Seorak, Inje side) |
| Socheong | Baekdam, Osaek or Hangyeryeong |
Coming from Seoul? Long-distance buses run to Sokcho. If you’re combining Seoraksan with a train trip elsewhere, our KTX booking window guide explains when tickets open.
If the Seoraksan booking doesn’t work
I can’t find Jungcheong in the list.
It’s not there. Jungcheong has been closed for rebuilding since November 2023, and the new building is planned without overnight stays. Book Socheong or Huiungak.
Every Seoraksan shelter shows nothing for late November.
That’s the wildfire-prevention sales restriction, Nov 14 – Dec 15. It applies to all four shelters.
The English page says I pay at the shelter.
Outdated. Winners pay online within the payment window (for round 6 it closed Oct 7 at 22:00 KST).
Can I apply for my friend who’ll arrive later?
No. Wins are for the applicant only, and everyone shows ID at the shelter.
I won Yangpok but my group is 6.
Check the group size you applied with. Bookings are capped at 5 people including you, and you can’t add people later.
Do I need a sleeping bag?
Yes. Blankets haven’t been rented since 2022.
