Naver Map in English (2026): Passport Sign-Up and What Works

Last checked: October 7, 2026 · Sources: NAVER Corp. press releases, the NAVER Map App Store listing and official carrier pages, linked below.

Yes, Naver Map works in English (and Chinese and Japanese), and it is the most reliable map for getting around Korea by subway, bus and on foot. You can search, read translated reviews and get transit directions; you only need a Naver account to save places, book or pay. Since June 4, 2026, foreign visitors can verify their identity with an overseas-issued passport instead of a Korean phone number, which opens up bookings, orders and payments inside Naver Map. Install it before you land and keep Google Maps only as a backup.

In December 2024 Naver described Naver Map as the only Korean map that supports four languages (Korean, English, Chinese, Japanese). In 2024 it extended the foreign-language versions to visitor reviews and place filters, and improved the translation of place pages and transit information.

Switching Naver Map to English

  1. Install NAVER Map from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Open the app’s Settings, find Language and pick English. Naver moves menus around between versions, so if you don’t see it, look for the menu (☰) or your profile tab first.
  3. Place names, transit stops and menus now show in English where a translation exists. Some small shops and menus may still show Korean names.

Naver also publishes an official guide for foreign users in English, Chinese and Japanese, and said in December 2024 that it would place leaflets at the Incheon Airport tourist information center, the Airport Railroad information desk and the Myeongdong Welcome Center.

Tip: Korean addresses and place names often search better in Korean. If an English search fails, copy the Korean name from a hotel confirmation or a Korean website and paste it in.

Passport verification: what changed on June 4, 2026

Until June 2026, Naver needed a Korean mobile number to confirm a member’s identity before they could book or pay. That locked short-term visitors out of booking a table or paying through Naver.

What Naver has officially said:

  • Anyone with a passport issued outside Korea can use Passport Verification.
  • You do it on your smartphone, with no Korean phone number and no customer-center request.
  • It goes through several steps of confirmation for reliability and safety.
  • Once verified, you can use Naver Map bookings, orders and payments and other travel-related Naver services.
  • The NAVER Map app’s June 2026 update (version 6.7.0) added “NAVER sign-up via passport authentication”, and the app asks for camera access to verify passports.

Naver hasn’t published the individual steps. Korea’s Electronic Times reported that the check combines a passport authenticity check with face recognition, so expect to photograph your passport and take a selfie. Have good light and your physical passport in hand.

Naver says it will add more services that support passport verification in phases and strengthen language support. It has not published a schedule.

How it goes in practice

  1. Sign up for or sign in to a Naver account in the NAVER Map app. Passport sign-up is supported in the app.
  2. Open a place that takes Naver bookings and tap Book (or the order button).
  3. When asked to verify your identity, choose passport verification.
  4. Follow the on-screen steps with your passport at hand.
  5. Finish the booking and payment. Payment options are set per venue, and Naver hasn’t said that every venue accepts foreign-issued cards, so check the payment screen before you count on it.

Bring your passport when you go, in case the venue asks you to confirm your name.

What still needs a Korean number (or works better with one)

Passport verification covers Naver’s own booking, order and payment flows. Other parts of Korean travel still lean on a local number:

Situation Without a Korean number Workaround
Naver Map booking / ordering / paying Possible with passport verification —
Venues that confirm bookings by text message (SMS) You may miss the message Get a SIM or eSIM that includes a Korean phone number
Other apps’ SMS sign-up checks (restaurant queues, taxi apps) Often blocked A tourist “data + voice” SIM receives SMS
Bank or government identity checks Not supported on LG U+ tourist SIMs Ask the bank or agency about its process for foreigners

LG U+ states on its tourist SIM page that its voice/SMS plans can receive SMS verification for restaurant and taxi reservation apps, but not identity verification for banking or government services, and that data-only plans cannot receive SMS verification at all. Saving places and planning a day

Lists are the most useful feature for trip planning:

  1. Sign in.
  2. On any place page, tap Save and add it to a list (for example “Seoul Day 1”).
  3. Open the list on the map to see all saved spots at once.

You can build lists before you fly, and you can share saved places with travel companions.

Paying in shops you found on the map

NAVER Pay and the Korea Tourism Organization said in December 2025 that Naver Map would show which stores use Npay Connect terminals, so you can check before you go whether a place takes NFC payments such as Apple Pay and contactless cards. NAVER Pay is expanding these terminals at tourist facilities, local restaurants and airports, and they accept cash, cards, QR codes and NFC payments.

When something doesn’t work

Search finds nothing in English.

Try the Korean name, the romanized name with no spaces, or the nearest subway station plus the shop name.

The route only shows a bus I can’t find.

Tap the route for the stop details: Naver shows the stop name, the bus number and real-time arrival.

I can’t book: it asks for identity verification.

Choose passport verification. Naver hasn’t published a list of which booking flows accept it, so if a venue’s flow still insists on a Korean phone number, call or walk in instead.

The booking needs a text-message confirmation.

It depends on the plan. LG U+ says its data-only eSIMs can’t receive SMS verification. KT says its data eSIM comes with a 010 number that receives calls and texts for free after the ID check (entry check) at its airport roaming center. A data + voice tourist SIM can also receive texts. Our eSIM guide, linked above, compares the plans.

Some menus are still in Korean.

Translation covers place pages, reviews and transit. If a menu photo is in Korean, use your camera translator.

Should I just use Google Maps?

In our own test on October 4, 2026 (Seoul Station to Myeong-dong Station; walking re-checked October 6), Google Maps showed transit routes, but walking, driving and cycling directions returned “outside our current coverage area.” See does Google Maps work in Korea?
