Incheon Airport Layover: Can You Join a Free Transit Tour?

Last checked: November 6, 2026 · Sources: Incheon International Airport and the Ministry of Justice K-ETA site, linked below.

Yes, if your layover is 24 hours or less and you are allowed into Korea. Incheon Airport runs its own transit tours from Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Most are free, a few charge a $3 or $4 entry fee, and you sign up at a 1st-floor desk after immigration with your passport and both boarding passes.

How much you can see depends on the clock. By our count, a 5-hour palace tour needs about an 8.5-hour layover once you add immigration and the trip back through security. With 7 hours, only the short afternoon market tour fits. With less, the transit area has hotel rooms, nap zones and showers.

Which option fits your layover?

What fits an Incheon layover: under about 6 hours, stay airside with the transit hotel, nap zones, showers 05:00-23:00 and the T1 K-Culture Zone 09:00-20:00; about 6.5 to 8.5 hours, only short tours such as Sinpo Market 15:00-18:00; about 8.5 to 24 hours, 5-hour tours such as Gyeongbokgung and Insadong, DMZ or Odusan; over 24 hours, no transit tour, K-Stopover packages for 24-72 hours; passport normally needs a visa, ask the tour desk first; visa-free but not K-ETA-exempt, get a K-ETA, 10,000 won, usually within 72 hours
Drawn by us from Incheon International Airport and K-ETA pages (checked November 6, 2026). The 1-hour and 2-hour buffers are our planning rule, not an airport rule.

The airport doesn’t publish a minimum layover. It sets two rules: a layover of 24 hours or less, and at the desk 30 minutes before the tour starts. To turn that into hours, we add our own buffers: 1 hour from landing to the desk, and 2 hours back at the airport before your flight leaves.

Layover What is realistic Why
Under about 6 hours Stay in the transit area Even the shortest tour (3 hours) plus our buffers needs about 6.5 hours
About 6.5 to 8.5 hours Sinpo Market (15:00–18:00) or a 4-hour morning tour Only if your landing time lines up with the start time
About 8.5 to 24 hours Any tour running that day, including the 5-hour palace and DMZ tours Enough time for the longest tours plus buffers
Over 24 hours No transit tour. Look at K-Stopover packages or enter Korea on your own The airport won’t take layovers over 24 hours

We’d pick the tour first and then check the clock, not the other way round. Tours start at fixed times between 09:00 and 15:00 (the two golf rounds start at 08:00), so a 10-hour layover that lands at 16:00 fits nothing.

Can you leave Incheon Airport during a layover?

Not everyone can. The airport lets three groups join its tours without a visa:

  1. Nationals of visa-free countries.
  2. Holders of a visa or permanent residency from the U.S. (including Guam and Saipan), Canada, Australia, New Zealand or one of 32 European countries, flying through Korea to or from those countries.
  3. “General transit passengers”: foreign nationals transiting at Incheon who join the transit tour program.

The airport doesn’t say which nationalities group 3 covers. If your passport normally needs a Korean visa, email the tour desk before you fly (contacts below).

Do you need a K-ETA to leave the airport?

Maybe. Visa-free nationals need a K-ETA unless their country is on Korea’s temporary exemption list, which the Ministry of Justice has extended to December 31, 2026. The K-ETA FAQ also exempts registered foreign residents, visa holders, and travelers aged 17 or under or 65 or over on the day they enter.

Transit passengers who stay airside don’t need one. But the K-ETA site says you must apply before entry if you decide to enter Korea, for example because your plans changed or you need to collect your bags.

A K-ETA costs 10,000 won (about $7–8) and is usually decided within 72 hours, so apply before you fly, not at the airport. Our e-Arrival Card vs K-ETA guide shows how to check whether your country is exempt.

The airport also notes that the Ministry of Justice does not allow two entries into Korea during a single visit. Plan one trip out, not two.

Which transit tours run on which day?

The airport lists each tour’s operating hours; we read them as leaving and returning to the airport. Most run from both terminals.

Gyeongbokgung Palace and Insadong (Changdeokgung on Tuesdays) Tue–Sun 09:00–14:00 $3 palace entry

The airport also lists two golf rounds: Club 72 Sky Course (₩180,000, daily, 08:00–13:00) and Orange Dunes Yeongjong (₩170,000, Tue, Sat and Sun, 08:00–13:00). Green fees, cart and equipment rental are included.

Tours change without notice. Going to Gyeongbokgung? Our Seoul palaces hours guide explains why the Tuesday tour switches palaces.

On the reservation page, November 6, 2026

  • A seasonal tour, “World of Letters & Shopping Escape” (Songdo Central Park, the National Museum of World Writing Systems and Hyundai Premium Outlet Songdo), ran 10:00–15:00 until November 28.
  • Sinpo Market showed for Terminal 2 only that day.
  • The Gyeongbokgung tour was fully booked online at both terminals, while the morning seagull tour still had seats.

How do you sign up for the transit tour?

Incheon Airport transit tour rules on airport.kr: (1) layover 24 hours or less, (2) passport and both boarding passes, (3) at the desk 30 minutes before the tour, (4) T1 desk 19-20 on 1F near Exits 1-2 after immigration, (5) T2 desk 5-6 on 1F across Exit 4
The Transit Tour Guide on the official Incheon Airport site, captured November 6, 2026. (1) Layover limit (2) Documents (3) Check-in time (4) T1 desk (5) T2 desk.
  1. Book online on the airport’s Transit Tour Reservation page, as a member or non-member. This is optional.
  2. After landing, pass immigration. On 2F, don’t go up to the 3F departure level: go through the Ministry of Justice entrance on 2F straight down to 1F, which the airport says saves time.
  3. Go to the 1st-floor registration desk at least 30 minutes before the tour starts, with your passport and boarding passes for your arrival and departure flights.
  4. Landed at the Concourse (gates 101–132)? Take the shuttle train to Terminal 1 or 2 first.
Terminal Transit tour desk
Terminal 1 1F after immigration, near Exits 1 and 2, desks 19 and 20 (the English page says “Gates 1 and 2”; the Korean page and the K-Stopover page say exits)
Terminal 2 1F after immigration, across from Exit 4, desks 5 and 6

Online “sold out” doesn’t mean full. The airport puts under 50% of seats online and gives the rest first come, first served at the desk. A booking is held only until 30 minutes before the start, then unclaimed seats go to the waiting list.

Worked example: a 7-hour layover

Say you land at Terminal 2 at 13:00 and your next flight leaves at 20:00.

Time Step Rule used
13:00 Land, immigration, down to 1F Our 1-hour buffer
14:00 At the T2 desk for Sinpo Market Airport: 30 minutes before start (14:30)
15:00–18:00 Tour Airport schedule
18:00 Back at the airport: check-in, security, departure immigration Our 2-hour buffer
Before boarding At the gate 30–40 minutes before the boarding time on your pass Airport rule
20:00 Departure

It works, with 30 minutes to spare at the desk. Land at 15:00 instead, and you would reach the desk after the 14:30 check-in time, so the same 7 hours buys you nothing outside.

If you go, check your airline’s check-in rules for the second flight. Foreign airlines open their Incheon counters 2 to 3 hours before departure, per the airport. If the group leaves without you at the last stop, the airport says getting back is your responsibility.

What can you do if you stay inside the airport?

These are in the transit area (airside), so you don’t pass immigration. All are on 4F.

The airport doesn’t list prices for the hotel, showers or lounges. Ask at the counter.

The Darakhyu capsule hotels are in the public area (T1 basement transportation center, T2 near the bus ticket counter), so you need to enter Korea to use them.

What about layovers over 24 hours?

The transit tour is out, but the airport’s K-Stopover program sells packages with a hotel night, transport and lounge access for stays of 24 to 72 hours, if you can enter Korea. You register at the T1 desks 19–20 or the T2 desk near Exit 3, 07:00–18:00.
