Most of the apps a short-term visitor needs now work without a Korean 010 number. Naver Map works in English, and since June 4, 2026 a passport issued outside Korea can replace the Korean phone check for bookings and payments. k.ride (taxis), CatchTable’s global version (restaurants), Papago (translation) and Korail’s English website (trains, email and password when you buy) don’t ask for a Korean number either. KakaoTalk works with your home number. The ones that can still trip you up are Kakao T (its sign-up needs an SMS check that often fails on foreign SIMs), T-money membership and anything tied to Korean identity checks; a tourist SIM with voice and SMS covers some of those, but LG U+ says not banking or government services.
Which apps work without a Korean number?
| App | What it’s for | Korean 010 number needed? | How you get in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Naver Map | Maps, transit, bookings | No | English interface; passport verification for bookings, orders and payments |
| Kakao Map | Maps, transit | Not stated | App Store lists English and Korean |
| KakaoTalk | Messaging | No | Your home number (230 country codes), SMS check |
| k.ride | Taxis | No | Google, Apple or email sign-up; foreign card, Alipay, GrabPay |
| Kakao T | Taxis | SMS check required | A Kakao Mobility report (Dec 2023) says the text often fails to reach foreign tourists |
| Papago | Translation | No requirement listed | Text, camera, voice, conversation, offline |
| CatchTable (global version) | Restaurant bookings and waitlists | No | Email sign-up, overseas card |
| Naver booking (inside Naver Map) | Restaurant and venue bookings | No | Passport verification |
| Korail English website | KTX trains | No | Email + password when you buy |
| Baemin | Food delivery | Not officially confirmed — check before you go | App in English, Japanese, Chinese |
| Coupang Eats | Food delivery | Not officially confirmed — check before you go | |
| T-money website membership | Card registration, refunds | Yes, or an I-PIN | I-PIN needs an alien registration number |
Naver Map: passport instead of a phone number
Naver Map is in English (also Japanese and Chinese), and you can search places and get transit directions straight away. Booking a table, ordering or paying used to need a Korean mobile number for the identity check.
Since June 4, 2026, Naver lets anyone with a passport issued outside Korea verify on their phone with no Korean number. That opens NAVER Booking, NAVER Order and payments inside Naver Map. The app’s June 2026 update (version 6.7.0) added “NAVER sign-up via passport authentication,” and the app uses the camera to verify passports, so have your passport in hand. Naver says it will add more services in phases; it hasn’t published a list or a schedule.
Menu paths and the full walkthrough are in our guide to Naver Map in English.
KakaoTalk: sign up with your home number before you fly
KakaoTalk doesn’t require a Korean number. Kakao’s help center says it works with phone numbers from 230 country codes: pick your country code, enter your number without the country code, and confirm by text message.
The text has to reach your phone. Kakao says delivery can be delayed in some countries depending on your carrier, and to contact them if the code hasn’t arrived within 24 hours. So do it at home, on your home SIM, before you switch to a Korean eSIM.
Taxis: k.ride instead of Kakao T
Kakao T is the main Korean taxi app, but a December 2023 Kakao Mobility report says its sign-up needs a text-message check on your phone, and foreign tourists often can’t receive those messages outside their home country.
k.ride is Kakao Mobility’s app for visitors. You sign up with Google, Apple or email and pay with a card issued abroad or wallets such as Alipay and GrabPay. The app is in English, Japanese and Chinese (simplified and traditional), with destination search and driver chat translated in 133 languages.
Restaurants: CatchTable global or Naver booking
CatchTable runs a separate global version for people without a 010 number. Its App Store listing says “No Korean phone number required,” offers bookings and remote waitlists, and says you can discover more than 8,000 restaurants. CatchTable’s help center adds the limits:
| CatchTable global version | |
|---|---|
| Sign-up | |
| Payment | Overseas-issued cards only |
| Deposits | Not refundable |
| Alerts | By email, not text message |
| Missing features | Empty-slot alerts, inviting companions |
| Which restaurants | Only those that joined the global version |
The second route is Naver booking inside Naver Map, with passport verification. Check the payment screen before you count on paying in the app.
Trains: KTX with just an email and password
Korail says that since April 2025 its English website asks only for an email address and a password when you buy, with no nationality, name or gender — and no Korean number. Keep both; you’ll likely need them to look up the ticket later (not officially confirmed — check before you go). Card payment and the step-by-step flow are in how to book KTX/SRT with a foreign credit card.
Food delivery: Baemin and Coupang Eats
Baemin’s app has been available in English, Japanese and Chinese since February 3, 2026, and its App Store listing shows those languages. Whether you can sign up and pay without a Korean number is not officially confirmed — check before you go. We found no official page on Coupang Eats sign-up for visitors either.
Transport cards: what needs a Korean number
Seoul says foreigners can buy the Climate Card short-term pass the same way residents do, and since March 17, 2026 the new card machines at Line 1–8 stations accept foreign-issued credit and debit cards for it.
Registering a card on the T-money website is different: membership needs an own-name Korean mobile phone or an I-PIN, and an I-PIN needs an alien registration number. Most short-term visitors have neither, so treat the card like cash and don’t count on online registration.
When you do need a Korean number: tourist SIM with voice
If an app insists on a Korean number, the fix is a tourist SIM or eSIM that includes one. LG U+ says its voice/SMS plans can receive SMS verification for restaurant and taxi reservation apps, but not identity verification for banking or government services. Its data-only plans can’t receive SMS verification at all. Prices and the three carriers compared: Korea eSIM vs USIM vs pocket Wi-Fi.
What we’d set up before the flight
Our view: install Naver Map, k.ride, CatchTable’s global version and Papago at home, and sign up for KakaoTalk while your home SIM still gets texts. That covers maps, taxis, restaurants, translation and messaging without a Korean number. Pay for a data + voice plan only if a specific app you need still asks for a 010 number; for most short trips a data-only eSIM is enough.
| Before you fly | Why |
|---|---|
| Sign up for KakaoTalk on your home SIM | The SMS code goes to your home number |
| Create a k.ride account and add a card | Sign-up uses Google, Apple or email |
| Install CatchTable’s global version | The Korean version needs a 010 number |
| Try Papago’s offline mode | The listing says text translation works offline |
| Note the email + password you use for Korail | Korail asks only for these when you buy |
If the sign-up still asks for a phone number
The verification text never arrives
Your home carrier may block or delay texts abroad. Kakao suggests asking your carrier whether you can send text messages from abroad, and warns that repeated sign-up attempts can get you restricted, so don’t keep retrying.
A restaurant flow asks for a Korean number
Switch to CatchTable’s global version or to Naver booking with passport verification. If neither has the restaurant, call or walk in.
Kakao T won’t let you finish sign-up
Use k.ride, which signs you up with Google, Apple or email instead.
A bank or government site asks for identity verification
LG U+ says its tourist SIMs don’t cover this; for other tourist SIMs it’s not officially confirmed — check before you go. Ask the bank or agency about its process for foreigners.
